New Delhi: In the runup to Bihar assembly polls, the alleged death by suicide of Haryana cadre Dalit IPS officer Y Puran Kumar - resulting in mobilisation by his community in the state and political leaders from across the spectrum, including NDA allies, seeking justice for him - has put the ruling BJP at unease.
The incident has also brought to the fore the caste overtones in Haryana's society and bureaucracy, with IAS and IPS lobbies taking slightly different stand on the issue.
The alleged death by suicide took another twist on Tuesday with an investigation officer - Sandeep Lather - involved in one of Kumar's alleged corruption cases, ending his life by leaving a three-page suicide note and a video message. In his suicide note, Lathar alleged that ADGP Puran Kumar was corrupt.
On Tuesday, both Congress' Rahul Gandhi and BJP's Bihar ally LJP (RV) chief Chirag Paswan visited Kumar's residence.
On Monday, another BJP ally, RPI leader and Union minister Ramdas Athawale visited Kumar's residence and later met Haryana CM Nayab Saini. Later, RPI's Haryana unit leaders claimed that the CM during his meeting with Athawale expressed his helplessness on the issue with bureaucracy calling the shorts.
Even after the Haryana government sent DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave and transferred Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, both named in Kumar's suicide note, his family is still not ready for the postmortem of the body. Kumar's widow, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, has demanded that Kapur and Bijarniya be named in FIR for allegedly abetting her husband's suicide.
BJP's central leadership, with several of its Union ministers from the SC background, is keeping a close watch and may reach out to the community in the state. BJP is wary of the matter getting out of control as the Opposition in poll-bound Bihar may try to take this opportunity to play 'Mandal versus Kamandal' politics.
