West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday visited Darjeeling district’s Mirik, which has been worst hit by the landslide and incessant rainfall, and met the affected families and inspected damaged homes near Mirik lake.

Banerjee announced that all families who lost their homes in the landslides will receive financial assistance of Rs 1.2 lakh under the state government’s ‘Banglar Bari’ scheme.

In Mirik’s Soureni and near Mirik lake several houses were affected due to landslides.

“Those whose houses were affected during the recent landslides and natural calamity will get houses. The survey will be done by the District Magistrate in urban areas and Panchayat Pradhan in the rural areas. After the survey, houses will be given,” GTA member Arun Sigchi told ET. Arun Sigchi, a Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) executive member and in charge of health and family welfare, had been taking all care of the injured who were being treated in a private hospital and all other necessities in the relief camp at Soureni.

Sigchi today visited the funeral of Arushi Chhetri who died recently in the landslide in Soureni, killing four members of one family, while they were sleeping.

“Those who were affected have received both compensation and jobs within just seven days. A meeting has been called tomorrow to review the entire work done,” Banerjee pointed out.

Banerjee today also held an administrative meeting with local officials at Sukhiapokhri to review relief and rehabilitation work in the region.

Elaborating about relief and restoration work, CM said that every stretch affected by landslides has been cleared. “I would like to give full credit to the civil administration, police administration, and all departments involved,” she said. “We have already set up camps where duplicates of any lost documents can be applied. A health camp is also functioning nearby. Community kitchens and relief centres are running everywhere.”

“We are rebuilding houses and bridges, after clearing the landslides, and running relief camps and community kitchens. A few people in North Bengal are spreading false news to demoralise others. We are doing relief work as it is our duty to stand by the people. Entire bridges have been washed away, even a school has been lost,” Banerjee said.

Banerjee once said that neighbouring Bhutan has released water from as many as 56 rivers.

Banerjee, without naming anyone, claimed that some people are doing politics over Dhupguri and Moynaguri in Jalpaiguri district. “The day I visited Mirik's Dudhiya bridge, I visited three relief camps in Dhupguri. Relief materials were distributed door to door to ensure every affected family received help,” Banerjee claimed.
