Shardiya Navratri 2025: Today, September 22nd, is the first day of Sharadiya Navratri, the most sacred day of Goddess Durga. According to the Hindu calendar, Sharadiya Navratri begins on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada. Today, devotees will worship Goddess Durga by installing a Kalash. During Sharadiya Navratri, it is customary to worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga for nine days. This year, too, Sharadiya Navratri will last for 10 days, not nine. It should be noted that after installing the Kalash on the first day of Navratri, the first form of Goddess Durga, Shailputri, is worshipped. Let's learn from Noida-based astrologer Rakesh Chaturvedi about the significance of worshipping Goddess Shailputri. What offerings should be made to Shailputri? Which mantras should be chanted to please Goddess Shailputri?

The Legend of Goddess Shailputri
Long ago, Prajapati Daksha organized a grand yagya. Daksha invited all the gods to the yagya, but did not invite his daughter Sati and her husband, Lord Shiva. Sati became anxious to attend the yagya organized by her father. Lord Shiva told Sati that if Prajapati had not invited her to the yagya, it was inappropriate to go. However, seeing Sati's persistence, Shiva allowed her to attend.
When Sati returned home, her sisters taunted her and insulted Lord Shiva. Daksha also spoke insulting words towards her, causing Sati great pain. Distressed by this insult, Sati jumped into the sacrificial fire and sacrificed herself. Upon this, Lord Shiva appeared on the sacrificial ground and destroyed everything. Sati's next birth was in the home of the god Himalaya. Because of her birth in Himalaya's home, she was named Shailputri.
