Why are there stones between the tracks?

These stones are not ordinary, but they have a special purpose. They are called "Ballast", and they are necessary for the stability, safety, and longevity of the railway track. You can understand them like this-

To give stability to the tracks
The weight of the train is very high, and when it moves, there is heavy pressure on the tracks. Ballast stones keep the tracks firmly in place. These stones interlock with each other to form a solid base, which prevents the tracks from moving. If these stones are not there, the tracks may shift or become crooked, increasing the risk of accidents.

Distributing weight
The weight of the train falls directly on the tracks, and the ballast stones spread this weight and transmit it to the ground. This prevents uneven pressure on the tracks and makes them durable for a long time. Without ballast, the tracks may sink into the ground or break.

Drainage facility
During rainy days, water may accumulate around the tracks, which increases the risk of rusting or weakening of the tracks. There is a gap between the ballast stones, due to which the water drains out easily, and the tracks remain dry. This drainage system protects the railway track from waterlogging and erosion.

Reducing vibration and noise
The tracks vibrate when the train moves, which can produce noise. Ballast stones reduce noise by absorbing these vibrations. If these stones were not there, the train would make more noise when it moves, and noise pollution would increase in the surrounding areas.

Protection from temperature changes

Metal tracks expand and contract in summer and winter. Ballast stones give flexibility to the tracks and balance the expansion or contraction caused by temperature changes. This prevents cracks in the tracks, and they remain safe for a long time.

Prevention of plant growth
If there is soil between the tracks, plants may grow there, which can weaken the tracks. Ballast stones prevent the growth of plants, as they do not contain nutrients and do not allow the roots of the plants to grow.
