Man City clash descends into chaos as TWO red cards shown in controversial draw

Send Push

Chaos erupted near the end of Manchester City's Champions League tie against Monaco, as two red cards were shown and former Tottenham centre-back Eric Dier scored a late penalty to earn a 2-2 draw.

City went in front inside the first quarter of an hour through Erling Haaland, who got on the end of Josko Gvardiol's clipped pass before lobbing the ball over Monaco goalkeeper Philipp Kohn.

Less than three minutes later, Monaco levelled with Jordan Teze firing home an effort from the edge of the box. It was an excellent finish from the former PSV man, who gave Gianluigi Donnarumma little chance.

That setback didn't stop City from going forward, and they went back in front just before half-time, with that man Haaland at it again. The Norwegian, who had just seven touches in the first period, scored from two of them as he headed Nico O'Reilly's cross into the bottom corner.

Pep Guardiola's side controlled most of the second half as they looked to hold out for a second straight Champions League win, but havoc struck in the 90th minute when Monaco appealed for a penalty. Dier was incensed after City substitute Nico Gonzalez appeared to catch him in the face.

Referee Jesus Gil Manzano waved away appeals on the pitch but was soon advised to go over to his pitch-side monitor by VAR. As the Spaniard walked across to the touchline to review the incident again, turmoil broke out between the two benches as frustration boiled over about the potential decision.

City and Gianluigi Donnarumma, who had sprinted across to the technical area to speak to the goalkeeping coach, were adamant that it wasn't a spot-kick, while Monaco demanded Manzano to change his mind.

In the end, after Manzano handed out two red cards to the City backroom staff for their protests, he overturned his initial decision and pointed to the spot, giving Monaco a guilt-edge opportunity to level for a second time.

Dier, who infamously scored a penalty for England against Colombia at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, stepped up and converted from 12 yards, sending Donnarumma the wrong way.

City pushed in stoppage-time to find an all-important winner but couldn't break down a resolute Monaco defence and had to settle for a point, their fourth in two Champions League matches this season.

Speaking after the game, two-goal hero Haaland cut a frustrated figure. He told TNT Sports: "I don't think we played good enough. We don't deserve to win.

"We need more energy. We needed to do more of what we did in the first half. We dominated much more and then in the second half they took the lead much more. It's not good enough."

When asked about the Monaco penalty, Haaland added: "I didn't see it. I don't know, if you kick someone in the face I guess it's a penalty."
