Monsoon Foods: Hot pakoras and spicy street food taste great during the rainy season, but the risk of stomach upset also increases during this time. Food can spoil quickly due to moisture. In such a situation, it is important that we eat only street food in the rain which is fresh, hot and made in a clean place
As soon as the rainy season arrives, cold winds start blowing and the urge to eat also increases. Be it hot pakoras with tea or the aroma of spicy food coming from the roadside – all this seems even more tempting in the rain. But keep in mind, due to humidity and dirt, food gets spoiled quickly in this season and the risk of infection increases. In such a situation, it is important to pay special attention to cleanliness and hygiene while choosing street food. Let us know which street foods are considered relatively safe in the rainy season, if you eat them from the right and trusted place.
Hot dumplings
Pakodas and Bhajiyas are the most popular snacks during the rainy season. They are freshly fried in very hot oil which reduces the risk of infection. Try to buy pakodas from a cart where they are being taken out of the pan in front of you. Avoid pre-fried or cold pakodas.
Masala Corn
Boiled or roasted sweet corn is a comforting snack in this season. It is prepared at high temperature and hence is considered safe to eat. Buy it from a hygienic vendor and enjoy it by adding lemon and spices to it, but avoid heavy mayo corn as it can get spoiled quickly in the rainy season.
Steamed Momos
Steamed momos are comparatively safe during the monsoon season as steaming kills most bacteria. Just make sure the momos are freshly made and the seller is clean. Avoid tandoori or fried momos that have been stored for too long or fried repeatedly.
Idly-Dosa
Fermented foods like idli and dosa are light and good choices in this season. Their batter is gut-friendly and they are best served hot. Just make sure that the sambhar and chutney are hot too – cold or open chutneys can cause stomach upset.
Egg street food
Boiled eggs or freshly made egg bhurji are a good and safe option during the rainy season. Make sure the eggs are cooked thoroughly. Avoid vendors who use half-boiled eggs or old spices. Buy from places with clean utensils and covered items.
Tea Coffee
There is something different about the pleasure of masala tea or filter coffee in the rain. They are safe because they are hot. Just make sure that the milk is fresh and has not been heated throughout the day. Tea with ginger, cardamom and spices also helps in boosting immunity in monsoon.
