Aldi introduces £13 rule change starting next week

Starting Monday, September 1st, Aldi will roll out a new pay increase for over 28,000 hourly employees across the UK which will be slightly higher than originally planned. The UK's fourth largest supermarket announced in July that Store Assistants would see their pay rise from £12.75 to £13.00 an hour. However, Aldi has now confirmed that the new base rate will actually be £13.02 per hour. the highest-paying supermarket in the country.

This will make Aldi the highest paying supermarket in the UK. For long-serving employees, the hourly rate can climb higher, reaching £13.95.

Workers in London will also benefit from a rise, with wages going from £14.05 to £14.35 per hour, and up to £14.66 based on service length.

This is the second pay rise Aldi staff have received in 2025. From April 2025, the National Living Wage rate for workers aged 21 went up to £12.21 per hour.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: "Our colleagues are at the heart of our success, and we're committed to ensuring they are fully rewarded for the outstanding work they do.

"Today's higher than planned pay rise is part of our promise to never be beaten on pay."

Aldi remains the only supermarket in the UK to offer paid breaks, which the company estimates are worth around £1,425 a year to the average store colleague.

The retailer aims to open 40 additional stores by the end of 2025, and last year, Aldi revealed a record-breaking £800 million investment in the UK, following an all-time high in sales.

A Which? survey conducted in February revealed that Aldi is the UK's third favourite supermarket, behind M&S and Tesco. Surveying about 3,000 shoppers in the UK, Aldi was given a solid four-star rating for value for money, the highest in the 2024 price analysis.

However, Aldi received just two stars for store appearance, stock availability, product quality, and customer service, with shoppers citing long queues, rushed checkouts, and poorly stocked stores.
