I couldn't quite believe that the "world's prettiest city" was right here in my home country, just a few hours away from me. That's right folks, it's not Paris or New York City. Instead, this smaller UK city is one you might not expect to see topping the list.
I'd heard of this city before, but I can't say I'd ever been there before this trip. Keen to see what all the fuss was about, I boarded my train and headed to the north. It's a city which has been called "better than Venice and Barcelona", but yet this city still remains underrated. Chester has a lot going for it, from its university to its beautifully clean streets and historic buildings. I preferred it over York, a popular tourist city with similar appeal which draws in plenty of visitors from around the UK and the world. I also liked it more than Bath which is another hotspot for visitors - but I think Chester has much more to see.

It was named "the world's prettiest city" in 2024, before being called one of the "world's most welcoming" cities this year by Booking.com.
While it might not seem like an obvious tourist destination for Brits, plenty of international tourists make their way to the city by the coachload.
On the day I visit, it's slightly raining and cloudy, but the weather hasn't stopped people from heading out onto the thriving high street for a coffee, lunch, or a bit of shopping.
After strolling along the streets, I make my way to Chester Market - an impressive and relatively new addition to the city.
The market opened in 2022, and it's exactly the type of place you want to see in a city. It offers an exciting array of cuisines and has an exciting European feel.
No matter who you bring to this market, there will always be something for everyone. It's ideal for food or drinks and its modern feel makes it a highlight of the city.

Walking around the city, I notice the mix of old and new buildings. Councillors and locals tell me they're proud of how the city has integrated modern architecture while still retaining its historic landmarks.
Another must-see spot in the city is its famous Eastgate Clock which is located on the main high street. Eastgate clock is Chester's most iconic landmark and the second most photographed clock in the World after Big Ben.
The clock was built in 1899 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of 1897.
Locals are proud of the landmark and you can't miss it as you're exploring the city. You can take a walk up to the bridge which the clock sits on which makes a great viewpoint for looking at the city from above.
Having visited many UK towns and cities, Chester wasn't somewhere I'd thought of taking a day trip too - but it's a place where visitors won't be left with nothing to do.
The city is an underrated spot in the UK, sitting so close to Manchester, I'm surprised it hasn't built up a bigger reputation.
If you're looking for a day out where you can enjoy everything a city has to offer at a slower pace, Chester could be the place for you.
With winter on the way, Chester is the perfect place to visit to enjoy its festivities and cosy atmosphere.
