Police have confirmed that a dog involved in a fatal attack on a nine-month-old baby has been put down. The incident occurred in south-east Wales on Sunday at around 6pm at a home on Crossway, Rogiet near Caldicot, Monmouthshire, where emergency services, including multiple police units and ambulances, responded to reports of a dog attack. Gwent Police said the baby was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service.
Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend addressed the incident during a press briefing on Monday, extending condolences to the child's family and confirming that the family dog involved has been put down. Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, including establishing the breed of the dog.
Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend said: "Our officers attended a report of an attack by a family dog in an address in Crossway, Rogiet, at around 6pm on Sunday, November 2.
"A nine-month old boy was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service. The family of the child are being supported by dedicated officers.
"The dog was sedated and removed from the property and taken to a vet where it was put down.
"We are in the very early stages of this investigation and officers are continuing to carry out various lines of enquiry to understand the circumstances of this tragic incident.
"Enquiries are still ongoing to establish the breed of the dog. It is important that we are certain of the breed and we will release information once it has been formally confirmed.
"No arrests have been made at this time."
She added: "We understand that an incident like this can have an impact on our communities but we urge people not to speculate and to consider the impact that speculation can have on the family and on friends of the family.

Officers remain at the property as enquiries continue, and anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact Gwent Police on 101.
