The UK's cheapest supermarket for these 13 everyday items revealed

Households across the UK remain under the grip of high prices with food prices continuing to surge. Food inflation increased to 4.2% this month from 4% in July, marking the fastest rise for 18 months.

It means people will be looking to save some money where possible. It's handy to know the cheapest supermarkets for everyday items such as eggs, butter and chocolate.

According to The Grocer, Tesco is currently the cheapest supermarket to shop at. The site uses a weekly mystery shopping survey and price comparison tool, known as The Grocer 33, to compare retailers.

The tool randomly selects 33 items to compare the costs of supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Waitrose. The latest statistics show that Tesco and Asda each boasted the 13 cheapest items, with the former inching ahead overall.

Tesco was given the edge by its Clubcard discounts on branded items such as Kopparberg cider and Gü Zillionaire cheesecake desserts. It had a total of £64.52 - a 0.7% increase on last year but a 4.6% drop on last month.

Meanwhile, Asda's basket was just 0.3% more expensive at £64.72. This was a 4.3% increase on last year, despite selling seven of the exclusively cheapest items such as Petits Filous and Glade air freshener.

Morrisons came in at £66.08, which was 2.4% more expensive than Tesco. Sainsbury's finished in fourth place with a total basket cost of £67.23.

The supermarket's Nectar Prices gave the cheapest chicken korma ready meal, Nando's Perinaise and Colman's chilli con carne seasoning.

The Waitrose basket cost 24.3% more than Tesco's with the supermarket recording a 5% annual price increase. According to the overall data, minced beef saw the biggest annual rise with Liquorice Allsorts falling by the largest amount.

Tesco was confirmed as the cheapest supermarket for the following items:

• Borlotti beans (400g) - 47p.
• Broad beans (650g) - £1.40.
• Coriander (30g) - 52p
• Gü Zillionaire cheesecake desserts - £2.50.
• Kopparberg cider (4 x 330ml cans) - £4.75.
• Garlic and coriander naans (two-pack - 260g) - 80p.
• Rose's Lime Juice Cordial (one litre) - £2.75.
• Scoth bonnet chillies (50g) - 79p.
• Spaghetti hoops (395g) - 39p.
• Swede (own-label) - 62p.
• Tzatziki (200g) - 99p.
• Wholemeal loaf (medium sliced, 800g) - 75p.
