Guwahati: A 13-year-old boy lost his life, and two others sustained serious injuries after an explosive device set off in Assam's Tamulpur district on Saturday, triggering panic among the residents.
The deceased, identified as Ima Boro, was playing near a house of a local resident Raju Ramchiary in Bogajuli Dholapara when a suspected mortar detonated. The injured, Mohit Basumatary (10) and Nijara Ramchiary (35), are receiving treatment at Kumarikata state dispensary and are in stable condition, police said.
Tamulpur superintendent of police (SP) Diganta Kumar Choudhary said the blast's origin remains unclear, though its proximity to Darranga military station is under scrutiny. He assured a thorough investigation to determine how the explosive device ended up in the area. "The incident occurred at around 1pm. While the boy died on the spot, the blast injured the two others who were there at the time," the SP said.
"We are still investigating the source of the suspected mortar. Once we have concrete evidence, further details will be shared," he added.
Tamulpur MLA Jolen Daimary condemned the tragedy and said he has directed the police to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident. "I am deeply saddened by this incident and have asked the SP to investigate thoroughly. I also urged the chief minister to appropriate compensation for the bereaved family," Daimary said.
